Still raining so decided to do washing up. Takes about 5 minutes to fill the bowl with hot water because the tap is so slow. Leave first lot in soak and have a coffee. After coffee just able to get hands in water to do cups and glass in soak. Wash any sharp knifes now. Really easy to wash as been in very hot water for 10 minutes. Next soak plates and sweep up dogs crap from postman. They get to rip envelopes and junk mail so long as no staples in it. Finish plates and put anything else in soak. Listen to Radio while last lot in soak. Finish washing up after about 45 minutes to an hour depending on whether 1 or 2 days since it was done. Sometimes there is a small amount of washing up liquid and water in the bowl if I’ve needed to wash my hands during the day with washing up liquid.
Over the 30 years I’ve done this I’ve saved so much detergent and water. All it’s cost me is a little time and thought. Not cos I’m mean. Cause of the pictures I saw as a child of women washing pots with ashes in the river. What right did I have to be so privileged? These things were a luxury. I treat them so. Water I make sure is filthy when I’ve finished with it. Now I have an 8 foot square piece of land to use while I live where I live I don’t even have to waste some of my dirty water. During the winter when I have a bath I leave the water in the bath until it goes cold before I let it out. It’s like having a moist radiator for a while. Usually don’t need water for the garden in the winter though. If the floors need mopping though I use it for that. It’s a pain. You have a bath and then have to mop the floors while water is still hot. I can’t mop floors at minute cos of bad shoulder.
Today I’ve managed to get washing up done in two lots. Had a few takeaway plastic containers to wash up as well. Use them to heat things in microwave. Freeze things in. Even to grow seedlings in. Lids seem to not last long as they go brittle after a while. Think it’s the freezing that makes them go brittle.
